Clean & Green Chemicals

Some great Panasonic Vacuums

Let’s talk a little about Panasonic Vacuums. We’ve carried Panasonic for over 20 years. Unlike several other vacuum companies, Panasonic makes a variety of products, which is actually a good thing. They make Blue Ray Players, TV’s and lots more. The good thing about this is that once you’ve owned one of their products, you see the quality, so you buy more. Having been familiar with their vacuums, when it was time to buy a Blu-Ray player, I didn’t hesitate to get a Panasonic one. I liked it so much; I now have a Panasonic Shaver and digital camera as well.


Canister Vacuums:
When I started at McHardy’s about 4 years ago, one of our best selling Panasonic Canister vacuums sold for $600. Well, this past year Panasonic adjusted their lineup and that vacuum has come back, with a different colour, only now it sells for $350. They have managed to bring the cost down, while keeping the same quality.  (Panasonic MCCG902)

They also have some new technology. Panasonic has developed the “Opti-Flow” system, which prevents the vacuums from losing suction. Vacuums have one part of the dirt chamber, where all the suction comes in. It is very common, as the bag fills, for that opening to get covered over, and partially blocked. What Panasonic has done is put the bag in what is essentially a basket. This basket prevents the opening from being covered, so you can use the vacuum without losing suction as it fills up.

Upright Vacuums:

For years the Panasonic Upright has been a staple among the upright vacuums of choice. We still sell more Panasonic Upright bags than any other bags. There are two fantastic things about the Panasonic Uprights:

1. Steel Brush roll – If you have pets in your home or people with long hair, the steel brush roll can be your new best friend. One of the most common vacuum killers out there is hair. What happens is the hair gets into the bearing and wraps around it. Then it heats up because of the friction and melts. It becomes like a hard plastic and will cause the roller to seize up. There is not a week that goes by where we don’t see seized brush rolls in our store. This can cause even more serious damage as it can easily destroy the housing where the brush roll sits, which typically means a new vacuum. The steel brush roll is the solution to that problem. In the steel brush roll, the bearings are sealed, so the hair and dirt can’t penetrate and cause any damage.

2. The second thing is that most of the Panasonic Uprights carry an “over the counter Replacement” warranty. This means that if something happens to your vacuum under warranty, they don’t fix it, they give you a replacement unit. For most of these units that means a new vacuum if there is any defect for 2 years!

Reliable Steam Cleaners:



Recently, we have been talking about cleaning your home without the use of harsh chemicals. In continuing with this idea, I’d like to talk a little bit about some Steam cleaners that we carry.

Well for years we have carried the best in Household Steam cleaners. The Reliable steam cleaners are the perfect way to clean your home without those chemicals. We carry the full size cleaners that are great for your whole home. One of the great features of the Reliable E5 model is what they call the “Continuous Steam System.” With a lot of steam cleaners when you run out of steam, you have to turn the unit off and wait for the boiler to cool down before you can use it. I’ve even heard of someone who had to climb on the roof to get the cap after taking it off before the unit was properly cooled.

With the CSS, the unit has a separate boiler tank; this means that if you run out of steam you simply fill it up, while it is on. Actually it has a warning light for when it gets low on water, so that you can fill it up BEFORE you run out of water. This unit also has adjustable pressure control, so you can turn the steam up or down. It also comes with a 20 piece accessory kit, so you can clean just about anything with Steam. As I’ve mentioned numerous times on this show, I have a little toddler running around our house and as I watch her crawl around on the floor, I’ve started to think a lot about what I am putting on that floor to clean it. This unit has steam within seconds, so you don’t have to wait for the unit to heat up. The only warning is that you don’t want to use it on Hardwood or Wood Laminate floors. There are two options for those, the T1 has two cleaning pads and sells for $99 and the T1-6 has six cleaning pads, selling for $119.

Lastly, we have the newest member of the Reliable family, the Pronto. This is portable, lightweight, handheld steam cleaner. This unit is super light and designed to fit in your hand. The reason that I bring these up is that they go great with microfiber cloths. As we talked about before the best way to kill bacteria is with heat and by drying the surface. Steam is the most effective bacteria killer. The heat kills all bacteria. The second way to kill bacteria is to eliminate moisture, or fully dry the surface. That is where E-cloths come in.

This is a cause that is very important to us. Four years ago one of our employees, Brenda, was diagnosed with Leukemia. She went to see her doctor about some bruising and bleeding on Thursday and by Monday she was admitted to hospital. She spent the next month away from her family, only seeing her children a couple of times, because her immune system was in such bad shape. This was a very devastating time for their family as well as for us at McHardy’s. Thanks to the research and testing that were done before she became sick, She has made a full recovery, but we want to do our part to help raise money for research for the next family that finds themselves in such a place.

New @ McHardy’s:
Well, as you know McHardy’s is closed on Mondays, so right now that tends to be my cleaning day. So yesterday, my wife and I went to work on cleaning our house. That used to mean getting out the bottles of cleaner, one for the glass, one for the counters, one for the stove, plus we would each grab a roll of paper towel. Well, not anymore! We recently got some E-cloths. So yesterday, we cleaned our entire house using a couple of microfibre cloths and a spray bottle filled with water! They work great on counters, glass, mirrors, the stove, any flat surface!

Microfibre is a man-made fibre that can be processed, woven and finished in a variety of different ways to achieve a specific result. Unprocessed Microfibre (fibres not split), woven in a flat weave, has very poor water absorption. In fact, it is used to manufacture water resistant clothing. The same Microfibre thread, when processed by splitting the individual threads and weaving in a loop or waffle pattern, become super absorbent. (The General Purpose Cloth we sell can absorb over seven times its weight in fluids). It’s like a flat sponge.

The best thing about them is that when you are done, you simply machine wash, with no fabric softener, and then hang them to dry. Just think of the money you can save on paper towel, not to mention all the money in cleaners.

When Brenda was diagnosed with Leukemia, Phil was standing there listening to the doctor ask her if she was using this chemical or that chemical to clean her home and it really hit him. He said, “Why am I standing here with a daughter with Leukemia, who uses half the chemicals he listed?” Thus began the search for safe chemicals and ultimately to what we have discovered, which is the E-cloth product. Our goal for the last four years has been to find a way to clean our homes safely. We are VERY excited about these cloths!

If you don’t believe me, take a look at the bottle of cleaner that you spray in your home. Search for the ingredients, I can guarantee that you won’t find them, or if you do, they will be a whole bunch of words you can’t pronounce. The thing is that there is no regulation governing what these companies can put in the bottles under your kitchen sink. We don't know what is in the bottle you are spraying all over your house.  I think it is a lot like cigarette smoke.  Years ago people did not know how dangerous second hand smoke was.

New Beam Limited Edition:

Now there aren’t too many of us who are excited about summer coming to an end. However, it is not all bad news; Beam has come out with their Fall Special edition Canister. This unit will clean homes up to 7000 Square Feet and has a ton of great features. IT is a quiet unit, so no more sharing the vacuuming with the neighbours, Also they have what is called a “soft-start” on the motor. This is designed to protect the motor and make sure it last even longer. The best feature and my personal favourite is that it comes with a 15year warranty on parts. That is an extra five years compared with their regular unit!! On top of that, it is a better price than the regular unit! So you are getting more and paying less!! It helps with the hurt of summer ending.

Miele Stands Up.

For the month of September, Miele is putting there money where their mouth is. About a year and a half ago, Miele increased their warranty to 5 years. This was to show that they believe in their product. Well, for the month of September, they are stepping up even more. Any Miele Vacuum purchase will come with a free upgrade to a 10year warranty!! That’s twice as long as any other portable unit warranty!

Tip of the Week:


This week’s tip is about vacuum smells. We get a lot of calls about vacuums that have started to smell. There are a few things that you can do to help get rid of this. The first thing would be to change the bag as well as the filters. Sometimes if there is something that has an odour in the bag, it can come through, so getting rid of the bag is important. If that doesn’t get rid of it, you can try different types of filters. While it isn’t available for every vacuum, some vacuum companies make a charcoal filter. Charcoal is what they use to purify water, because it absorbs odours. Miele is a perfect example of this. Their charcoal filter is amazing at keeping the odours inside the vacuum.

Lastly, if these things don’t work, you can get a product called Fresh Wave Vacuum Pearls. These are little pearls that you sprinkle into the vacuum bag. What they do is they absorb odours. Recently, I was cleaning a customer’s “smelly” vacuum and tried these pearls. Within seconds the odour had disappeared!

Tip of the Week:

This is a tip that I hope nobody ever has to use.  However, if you ever find yourself in this situation, you’ll be glad you know this. We’ve had a few customers of the last little while who have accidently sucked up water with their vacuum. As most of us know, the majority of household vacuums cannot handle picking up water. The natural reaction when you’ve sucked up some water is to turn the vacuum off right away, but that is only the start. What you need to do is take the vacuum outside, remove all filters and the bag. Then turn the vacuum on and let it run for about an hour. I will honestly tell you that this is the exact opposite of what I would think to do. Basically, the heat from the motor will dry the water up. It is actually your best chance to save the vacuum’s motor.
